Closed Club, Ladies' and Juniors' Tournaments - Finals Showdown

Sunday 10th April saw the finals of the Biddenden Squash Club Closed and Plate Competitions. In the 10 days leading up to the finals, over 100 games of squash were played by 70 competitors in all of the categories.

6 finals were played on the sunny Sunday afternoon, plate competitions for the Men, Ladies and Juniors and the Closed Competitions in the same 3 categories.

The Junior Plate Final saw 2 new finalists to squash competitions, Jack Morgan took on Tom Funnell and the early exchanges were extremely close as each player took a game to make it 1-1.

Jack eventually started to take control of the match and eventually took the title with a 3-1 win.

The Ladies Plate Final saw Rosie Cooper take on Natasha Quigley, the girls are good friends off of the squash court but to the delight of those watching this did not affect their efforts during the final.

Rosie took an early lead but then Natasha showed a huge amount of determination and skill to prevent Rosie from taking any more games.

Natasha went on to win 3-1 and got her name on the Club's Honours Boards for the first time.

In the Mens Plate Final it was a battle of youth vs experience as Callum Quigley took on seasoned performer Ian Hart.

Callum had already finished second in one previous tournament at the club this season so was looking to go one better this time round but Ian proved to be a tough competitor as he took a 2-0 lead. Callum fought back with a combination of power, skill and athleticism to level the game at 2-2 taking the match to a deciding game.

It was Ian that took the deciding game meaning that Callum would have to wait a little longer for is first title at the club.

The wait might not have been that long though as Callum was in action again later that afternoon as he was in the main Junior Final against strong favourite Chris Gorman.

Chris had played first team squash for the senior teams all season and Callum was well aware of the task he had to undertake. Having already played a 5 setter you could’ve expected a slower approach to the game but both players threw themselves into the match at full throttle and it was Callum that took the first game.

The tempo did not drop but unfortunately for Callum, Chris started to demonstrate why he has been winning on a regular basis in the clubs first team. Chris won the match 3-1 and took the title that had evaded him last season.

The Ladies Final saw the top 2 seeds against each other after both players had been pushed in previous rounds. Michelle Marsh in her first final since joining the club took on Lucy Kent.

Both ladies had played regular Kent League squash this season and this showed as their shot selections and executions put each other under pressure at every opportunity.

It was Lucy that had the better of the early exchanges with her powerful serve causing Michelle massive problems. Lucy took a 2-0 lead and appeared to be on her way to the title. Michelle had other plans though and with her experience started to force Lucy to make mistakes.

Michelle eventually levelled the match so a decider needed to be played. The tension grew as the final match was extremely close but it was Michelle that eventually took the match by rounding off a superb comeback.

In the Men’s Competition Pat Burt was in the final for 4th consecutive year against Robin Wilson. Robin had played an outstanding semi-final the previous day against the reigning champion and was looking to continue hat form into the final. Pat had not dropped a game on his way to the final and was keen to keep that record up. Pat proved to be too strong on this occasion and took the final 3-0 making it 2 titles in 4 years since joining the club.

The Club also celebrated the efforts of the men’s first team in their recent Cornwallis Trophy Final against Rodmersham Squash Club. They lost the match 4-1 overall with some excellent performances from all the players involved.

The afternoon was rounded off with a BBQ and social evening in the newly refurbished bar area at the club.

Biddenden Squash Club is always looking for new members of any age and ability, whether to learn the game, improve your fitness compete in the Kent League teams or just to socialise. Information can be found on this website or by ringing the club from 6pm on weeknights.
