The junior section of the squash club has once again had an outstanding
year within the Club and the County. We have had record numbers entering
tournaments and the arrival of the junior closed and plate tournaments.
Around Kent
Our 1st and 2nd teams won their respective Kent leagues and will both
be playing in the league above in the coming season.
As most of you are aware we will also be entering 2 more teams into
Division 3 of the Kent league which will make us the biggest club in
the county in regards to junior team entry.
Congratulations must also go to Callum Finnan who is the first member
of our junior section to represent the county. We are looking forward
to many more representatives as I am aware that Tom and Owen Reed have
been selected for Kent development squads and many of our girls have
been invited to Kent training also so good luck to all of them.
Beyond Kent
Many thanks to Max Morgans, Charlie Stow, Ben Allen and Callum Finnan
for supporting a sponsored 24hour squashathon in Liverpool to help raise
money for the Todd Ward Fund. The boys were excellent as they played
throughout the night and day as well as contributing to raising nearly
£1000 towards the Fund.
During the upcoming October half term there are plans to take a tour
to France to play squash and receive coaching at another club in a whole
different country! If you are interested please speak to Sam or Nikki
as they are heading up the trip and keep your eyes peeled for the info!!
Within the Club
What a year, we have had extremely successful tournaments again this
year and congratulations need to go to all those who participated in
the Team Tournaments, Closed and Plate Competitions. This includes those
who represented themselves brilliantly in the senior tournaments too.
Special congratulations to our winners:
Closed Tournament - Richard Quigley
Plate Competition - Lucy Kent
Handicap 2007 - Ben Allen
Another special congratulation needs to go to Richard Quigley, who
after years of getting beaten in Semi Finals and Finals, finally won
his first and second tournament on the same night as he won the Mens
Plate competition too so well done.
Junior Internal Leagues
Many of the juniors are now at a level to start playing matches and
with the set up of the 3rd and 4th teams there will also be an internal
league for those juniors within the club where they will play against
each other in the same format as the senior box leagues. They will need
to arrange games in their own time but it will provide invaluable experience
for those starting in the teams this year.
If you are interested get your name on the entry list which is on the
noticeboard now.
Important Information and Changes for September 2008
Due to our success through the excellent support that we receive from
the juniors and their parents/guardians we are continually expanding
and improving and currently have a waiting list to attend Wednesday
evenings. As a result there are going to be some changes to the structure
on a Wednesday evening so it allows for a better quality of coaching
with smaller groups resulting in more actual squash time per junior.
Within the Wednesday night sessions we are also restarting the Mini-Squash
scheme, where the juniors will work to complete tasks and move up the
levels of Fundation, Improver and Pro. Each time they complete a level
they receive a certificate until they have completed all levels which
will have prepared them to participate in club squash.
Unfortunately the certificates and passports that the juniors will
be working from are not free and we have to buy them from England Squash,
as a result it has been decided that the Wednesday night fee will increase
to £1.50 once this scheme is up and running.
All the money received goes towards the running costs of the junior
section and contributes to the light fees too.
As you are all aware it is compulsory for juniors to wear goggles when
they are playing. The club does have some pairs but they are starting
to become a little bit tired so we are asking as many of you as possible
to look at purchasing your own pair as you would with shin-pads for
a football team. This is particularly important for those playing in
the teams in the coming season.
